This improvement allows the fabrication of a micro reactive composite armor that is much more likely to stop shaped charge jet penetration into the armor in a much thinner plate of material.
The idea relates to a technique that increases the jet and projectile deflecting properties of quite small amount of explosive materials incorporated into the composite.
This idea, combined with related earlier and later ideas for composite armor, may bring light vehicle armor up to protection levels of light tanks, without the weight of "real" armor.
These ideas, combined, can give protection against all armor defeating projectiles, with the exception of those that vastly exceed the capacity of the possible thickness of the armor. For instance, an inch or two of composite will not stop a large caliber hypersonic penetrator slug or a shaped charge of diameter larger than the thickness of the armor.
But they can deflect both slugs and shaped charge jets far beyond the capacity of an equal thickness of common steel armor plate.
